Solid KDrama week and month ahead for us. We have 4 Premieres this week and 7 to look forward to in March.

We had a fantastic KDrama Coffee Break LIVE chat yesterday (as always!) where we dove IN on the “Marry My Husband” Finale and “Captivating The King” penultimate week, teeing us up for what I hope will be a satisfying and CLEAR ending. You can check out my thoughts on both below!

JENN’S WATCHLIST
And then there were 3…my wee watchlist

tvN / TVING “Captivating The King”

Overall a really solid drama. The first half+ was phenomenally fun and engaging. From episode 12 on it took a different, darker turn and for me, never really recovered. This doesn’t make it BAD just not as completely satisfying as those first 11 episodes.

In this week’s KDrama Coffee Break LIVE we all pretty much agreed that the ex-finance was an unnecessary character and plot device. I mean, if you’re going to bring in a new ‘supervillain’ for the final episodes they better out villain the main baddie, right?! But as we all know our girl SONG HA YOON is now the new standard for completely unhinged villains and her Jung Soo Min will be forever legendary.

Although Song Ha Yoon’s performance was my favorite, I would say the entire cast was on point. NA IN WOO cemented his ML bonafides before heading into the military. PARK MIN YOUNG proved why she is the reigning RomCom queen. I was completely smitten with CHOI GYU RI. And Marisa and I will both be looking for LEE GI KWANG’s next thing (kdrama or kpop come back!)

▶︎ Flex X Cop

Still absolutely love this crew and story. They are the highlight of my kdrama week! I am completely soft for this found family Jin Isoo (AHN BO HYUN) has discovered & I am excited to see how they rally around him in the 2nd half.

This week’s case of the week got us to where we needed to be but the leaps of logic to get there…😆 good. lord. I need to once again give a huge shout-out to PARK JI HYUN for her Lee Kang Hyun. She’s smart, tough, kind, and funny - my god, she is a master of the ‘side glance’! I love her relationship with her mother (and her cooking) and her disgraced, wrongly accused, ex-cop father. Also THRILLED that we are not getting some random triangle thingy and that it looks like our Detective Park (KANG SANG JUN) Coroner Yoon (JUNG GA HEE) ship is sailing! I just hope that the 2nd half stays as fun as the first half as we are now diving into Jin Isoo’s trauma-filled past.

I have no idea what is actually happening 😆 If not for the master class JO JUNG SUK is giving as King Lee In I’m not sure if I would have made it this far.

The romance has meandered since the big “You’re a woman?!” reveal and our brilliant baduk player (SHIN SE KYUNG) has proved time and again that a brilliant tactician in the real world they are NOT. There are just too many moving parts and not much given to us for the motivation of many of them. Like our guy Kim Myung Ha (LEE SHIN YOUNG)I get that he hates the king for killing his father but where did this affection for the now Crown Prince come from? Is he protecting the late king’s family for political or personal reasons? Why is he continuing to plot treason with our baduk player when every one of their plans has been discovered by the King? Why is he now seemingly aligned with the Principal Director? So many questions. And my god, Court Lady Dong (PARK YE YOUNG)? Who is she loyal to? The King? Queen Dowager? No-one? Now we learn that she’s had a crush on the now king since he was a Grand Prince? And I know this is such a minor thing but I NEED TO TALK ABOUT HER LIP GLOSS!

It’s poison, obviously. But HOW does it work?! I mean without her dying as well?! It’s Joseon era so it’s not like there is a cellophane protective layer that she’s slapping on her lips prior to putting on the lip gloss. And kissing the various kings seems to have a poisoning effect but how is she NOT dying in the process? Everything else is so convoluted - I need THIS answer! 🤣

SONG HA YOON finding Jung Soo Min

MBC

📣 I hate this title but I loved reading about SONG HA YOON’s process of ‘finding’ Jung Soo Min. Method acting is a mixed bag in my opinion and many actors take it too far, affecting their health. It sounds like Song Ha Yoon might have toed that line but I was happy to read that on the other side it sounds like it was a positive experience and she is excited to see where she can go now as an actor. It has also been reported that she will be joining LEE GI KWANG on “Knowing Brothers” sometime in March! Definitely want to check that out 😊

📣 Disney+ copying from the Netflix playbook releasing a 2024 K-Content Highight reel. We posted the video in Friday’s Newsletter and Dramabeans has a great breakdown of the video & all the KDrama goodness we can expect from Disney+ in 2024.
